Tijan is old-school book world with those special Indie Vibes that I adore, Canary shines, 4 Stars, ARC

Tijan has a way of entrenching you in her stories and Canary is no different. This is mafia/cartel magic, if you’ve loved Tijan’s other mafia stories, you will love this one. The structure of the novel and the progression of the relationships is crazy good. And thankfully, you do get to his POV as well, as the story hits a point in the novel that begins to be told through both of their eyes.

As I went into Canary fairly blind, I hesitate to give much away. . . that being said, I really enjoyed the two main characters, the side characters and Gus! (When you meet meet Gus, you’ll love him!).

When the story begins we are in the head space of Girl and as the story pulls us along into the often bloody world that Girl has found herself in, we begin to get a larger picture of who she is and it is both heartbreaking and darkly awesome.

Canary is fun, for real. It’s a bit darker and bloodier than typical Tijan, but not in my opinion so dark that it’s painful to sit with these characters throughout the story. I loved the romance, the characters, the story itself and that ending was exactly what my bookish soul needed it to be.

I totally recommend Canary, if you’ve read her other mafia books, you’re in for a treat. If you’re new to Tijan’s books, well, welcome, you’ll never want to leave.

I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

“I have to commit mass murder tomorrow night—enough to classify me as a serial killer,” he said. “You do not need to comfort me.”

Canary, an all-new unforgettable enemies-to-lovers standalone mafia romance from New York Times bestselling author Tijan is available now!

We were on the front lines in that world, the mafia world.

There was nothing soft or glamorous about it.

Who you were before no longer mattered. Names didn’t exist.

I joined anyway. I had no other choice because they took my sister.

Join. Find her. Try and make it out alive.

Then he won me in a poker game.

I hated him instantly, thinking he was like my other bosses before him.

He wasn’t. He was worse

He wasn’t just cold. He was dead inside.

It didn’t matter that he was gorgeous.

He was the most lethal thing I’d ever met.

He was also the only person who could keep me alive, if he didn’t kill me himself.

N/A This is a 102k mafia/cartel standalone.

This is the most violent book Tijan has ever written.

Trigger warning: references to sexual violence
